The CARAMANY’s winery was built in 1924 after the Phylloxera crisis. At that time, the producers wanted to get together to be stronger and pool their knowledge to obtain the full potential of the CARAMANY’s terroir. Through the last century, the life of the village, followed the French history (retirada of spain – war of 1939/1945) During the 1960s, the producers of CARAMANY, under the direction of the cellar’s oenologist Jean Rière, were the first to introduce vinification by ‘carbonic maceration’ who means with whole grapes in vat. This technique (discovered by Pasteur) is particularly well adapted to the old-vine Carignan grapes to extract all the aromas in the skins and in the pulp and thus give intense notes of cherry, mocha and spices. This technique is characteristic of CARAMANY’s wines and since 1977, has been obligatory in AOC «Côtes du Roussillon Villages CARAMANY», for Carignan. Over the year, we was pioneers for planted new grapes varieties in the vineyard like Shiraz Today, the winery is enriched about 80 winegrowers witches 1/3 are living mainly from the work of their vines. Since many years, Caramany’s wines are famous and popular in France, Belgium, Great Britain and Canada.
